Giancarlo Dall\u2019Ara is president of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alberghidiffusi.it\/?lang=en\">Alberghi Diffusi National Association<\/a>\u00a0and the concept\u2019s mastermind.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAlbergo diffuso is an Italian hospitality model that is 50 percent hotel and 50 percent small-village development,\u201d<\/em> the Rimini native explains.<\/p>\n<p>The approach restores a network of abandoned dwellings as guest accommodations, providing the immersive cultural experience of a bed and breakfast combined with the reliability, quality, and services of a modern hotel. Alleyways become metaphorical hallways, and piazzas become living rooms.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNature and the landscape were the most important attractions,\u201d<\/em> says Dall\u2019Ara. He first considered\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agriturismo.it\/en\/\"><em>agriturismo<\/em><\/a>, often called \u201cfarm stays,\u201d which are privately owned properties offering beautiful views, local fare, and hands-on experiences showcasing how and what the farm produces. But it was Ant\u00f3nio Ferro\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pousadasofportugal.com\/\"><em>pousadas<\/em>\u00a0of Portugal<\/a>\u00a0that intrigued him most.<\/p>\n<p>That means hotels calling themselves albergo diffuso may not adhere to Dall\u2019Ara\u2019s criteria. According to the International Alberghi Diffusi Association, only 150 are certified. For Dall\u2019Ara, the critical characteristic of a \u201ctrue\u201d albergo diffuso is the combination of accommodation\u00a0<em>and<\/em>\u00a0small-town development. For this reason, many Alberghi diffusi work in concert with government programs or preservation initiatives.<\/p>\n<h2>Germany Albergo Diffuso Style Accommodation<\/h2>\n<p>In recent years, countries around the world have introduced alberghi diffusi. In 2015,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.yakage-ya.co.jp\/en\/\">Yakage-ya Inn and Suites<\/a>\u00a0debuted in Yakage, in Japan\u2019s Okayama prefecture, a common stopover point for feudal lords and their coterie along Sanyo Road in the Edo period (1603-1868). The inn features several restored structures of a private residence that is more than 200 years old.
